In music, building a career isn’t just about talent or technical skills. The real challenge for artists today is finding a stage where they can truly connect with their audience and be seen, heard, and remembered.

Musician career journey

The idea comes from exploring the struggles musicians face, especially the difficulty of reaching an audience with their content. To better understand this and the needs of the project, the various steps below outline what an artist goes through in the early stages, giving a clearer picture of the challenges they encounter.

What they said
To get a clear picture of users, we did some research using different methods.

First, we looked at online forums and social media pages of various bands to spot common themes and trends in the music world and how people interact.

Then, we sent out a survey to around 110 people with different musical tastes to get a broad view of their preferences and habits.

We also conducted in-depth interviews with 7 people from the music industry, focusing on their early experiences and challenges. This mix of approaches gave us a detailed understanding of what users need, how they behave, and what they expect in the music scene.

The current situation

After gathering the data, we went through a filtering process to get a clearer picture of the issues and realities surrounding these topics, especially when it comes to the audience and the musical artist. What we've collected will serve as the starting point for moving the project forward in the next phase.

To better analyze the various needs, two main types of users were identified:

The artist's primary focus is on creating an engaging and professional performance environment, seeking tools to personalize their virtual stage, promote their work, and connect with their fans in real time. They also need a platform that simplifies logistics, such as managing events and monetizing their performances.
The audience is primarily concerned with accessibility, interactivity, and the overall experience. They seek an immersive and engaging environment that allows them to interact with the artist and other fans, enjoy high-quality performances.

The current market

Before proceeding with the prototype ideation, we conducted a detailed analysis of the products already present in the market. Among these, we identified several categories of platforms:
Professional

In this category, there’s a strong sense of community, but these platforms can also feel like closed spaces, making it hard to break in or find opportunities to reach a new audience.

Everyone

On these platforms, the content is highly diverse and includes a considerable amount of self-promotion. This offers the advantage of providing artists with increased opportunities to reach broader and more varied audiences, fostering greater interaction among different individuals. However, cultivating a genuine sense of community remains a significant challenge.

Fans

In this category, there is indeed a strong sense of community, yet at the same time, these platforms often appear as closed environments where it's difficult to break into or find opportunities to add a new type of audience

Devices

The main purpose of the platform is to let users watch live performances by artists. To better understand what users prefer in this area, the survey provided valuable data on the most popular platforms for accessing live concerts, performances, awards, or festivals. It’s clear that users care most about screen size, as it impacts their viewing experience and immersion. Based on this, the choice of devices and platforms for the project was guided by this insight. Specifically, we chose computers and Apple Vision Pro because of their web integration and potential for interactive chatbox features.
They prefer to use the largest screen home projector, or large TV

Prefer the computer device as it can access to more channels in the web

Due to devices limitations, they opt for using the phone or tables

The situation

Right now, both artists and audiences face several challenges. Artists struggle with limited resources, making it harder for them to find the right venues, make long-term decisions, and network within the industry. On the other hand, audiences miss out on important interactions, especially during performances, which creates a sense of disconnect and takes away from the live concert experience.

The goal

Live Room’s main goal is to create a platform that connects artists with their audience, building a sense of community and musical connection. When you enter an artist's "room," the experience turns into a live performance, giving artists the freedom to personalize the space however they like. It also keeps the audience connected, allowing for interaction throughout the show.

Ideate

Drawing from the insights gathered during our user research, we embarked on a structured brainstorming session. As we delved deeper, our initial ideas gradually crystallized, and over several hours of discussion, we shared and consolidated our thoughts. This collaborative effort culminated in the formulation of a comprehensive guideline that informed our design decisions and functionalities.

In the end, we narrowed down our ideas to four main themes, each addressing our users' concerns in different ways. The first two focus mainly on emerging artists, giving them a platform to showcase their talents and build a fanbase. The other two are aimed at the audience, offering more ways to interact and creating a stronger sense of community.
Concept 1

It gives artists the freedom to design and create their own stage, eliminating the need to search for or adapt to an existing one.
Concept 2

Artists can easily connect with their audience, using performances not only as a way to engage but also as an opportunity to improve their stage skills over time.
