There are three essential things for our daily life: food, clothing, and shelter. When traveling, food can be easily accessed at local restaurants, and accommodation can be found in local hotels. However, clothing is the one essential item that people still need to bring from home. Why is that?

Lugagge journay map

Every day, about 26,000 commercial flights transport passengers globally. With roughly 100 passengers per flight carrying an average of 1.5 bags each, nearly 3.9 million pieces of luggage travel through the skies daily. Luggage is a crucial aspect of our travels, yet it often brings stress and burden. Let's briefly review the common situations travelers face when handling their luggage during trips.

What's happening
In recent years, low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, EasyJet, and Wizz Air have significantly increased baggage fees, forcing travelers to face substantial additional costs. This situation has led many to resort to extreme solutions, such as wearing multiple layers of clothing, to avoid exorbitant fees. This phenomenon highlights the fact that sometimes the cost of transporting luggage can almost exceed that of the air ticket itself, which many people refuse to pay for a service of merely transporting their owned property. This behavior can also be interpreted through the concept of "spending aversion," whereby people tend to avoid paying for additional services or unnecessary expenses, especially for transportation purposes.

of people travel just with a carry-on for the short trip
of people have overpacked for a holiday
of people don’t buy extra baggage for short journeys
of people get streed out when comes to packing for a trip

Based on these initial observations, the question arises: are there any possibilities for allowing people to access clothing without the need for luggage? Now, let's consider the scenario: imagine what it would be like to travel without baggage.

User research insight

Initially, to test the idea, we surveyed a diverse group of individuals to gauge their reaction to a service offering the opportunity to travel light. Through surveys involving around 50 people, we found an 80% positive response to this concept. Additionally, other data emerged, as detailed below:
Finds packing to be physically and mentally stressful.
Faced challenges with packed items, such as being inappropriate for the weather or insufficient in quantity.
Encountered difficulties with luggage transport or clothing, including weight issues or damage.
Needed to buy specific clothing for a destination, especially for particular activities.

To progress to the next phase of ideation, we invited users to express their fears or doubts regarding this type of service, in order to better understand the various needs. Ultimately, four categories emerged on which the project must focus considerable attention: hygiene, shipping, fitting, and style.
Understanding the pickup locations, simplifying the pickup and shipping process in an unfamiliar country
Since it's a service centered around renting clothes, it's crucial to grasp how to ensure a reliable cleaning system
Variations in height, size, and body structure according to ethnic differences
The aesthetic factor is quite crucial in clothing as a form of expressing one's personality and taste

What they said

In order to understand user needs, improve decision-making, and develop a user-friendly product, we conducted qualitative user research through semi-structured interviews with 6 participants. The results of these interviews and the survey conducted were analyzed to create an affinity diagram, thus guiding the development process.

The current situation

When people set off on a trip, they never go empty-handed or without carrying some essentials. No matter the type of journey, travelers face similar situations, like preparing and getting around. But depending on the trip, there are also unique challenges. These two personas help give a clearer picture of what’s involved in different types of travel.

The current solution

Travelers have a few options for managing luggage. They can pack and carry everything themselves, which is the most popular choice but takes a lot of effort and time. Shipping services can handle bags from start to finish, but travelers still need to pack. Another option is buying everything at the destination, which skips the stress of packing and carrying but means spending time shopping during the trip. This option is like online shopping, offering items that fit your style and size without the hassle of transporting luggage.

Affinity diagram

Talking to travelers gave us a clearer picture of the different issues they face with luggage management while traveling. After brainstorming and gathering insights, we used an affinity diagram to sort everything out. This helped us pinpoint specific problems and start working on practical solutions.

The problem

Currently, the market lacks solutions to help users avoid or reduce the stress of handling luggage during travel. The available options are essentially the same as those from centuries ago—transporting belongings from home. Despite technological advancements and evolving travel experiences, the approach to managing luggage remains outdated

The mission

The mission is to find innovative solutions that enable all travelers to enjoy and relax during their journeys, transforming travel into a stress-free experience. Central to this vision is the transformation of the luggage-handling experience, we aim to create a new way of travel that saves time, energy, and reduces fatigue for everyone.

Ideate

Before jumping into prototype ideas, we took a close look at how people currently get clothes while traveling. From this, we found three key categories that meet different needs for travelers when it comes to clothing access.

CLOSET's strategy focuses on repurposing past collections by creating local rental hubs, reducing waste and overproduction in fast fashion. It also offers a rental service for tourists, fostering a sustainable ecosystem of vintage clothing while cutting CO₂ emissions associated with luggage transport, by air.

No matter your destination, we guarantee all travelers access to suitable clothing for their journey, helping them avoid packing unnecessary items or misjudging the weather. The algorithmic system recommends outfits based on personal style and destinations.

Stakeholders
After finalizing the concept and refining the platform for clarity and functionality, a comprehensive service process was designed involving five different
stakeholders. Users can browse clothing options and collect their orders directly from the hotel. For returns, they simply deposit the parcels at the hotel, where a designated service collects them for laundering. All clothing items are sourced from unsold stock across various shops and brands, giving these products a second life.To ensure a seamless experience, a user journey map was created and analyzed to thoroughly understand the user's experience at each step. This analysis identified pain points and guided the development of improved solutions, implemented through wireframing and iterative design enhancements. Additionally, various analyses and iterative processes were integrated to clarify the workflow and provide a clear understanding of how the entire system operates.

User journey map

The process of delivering the platform’s services to users, as shown in the earlier stakeholder analysis, involves different people and steps. This means users also have to go through more than one step to use the service. To make it easier for people who are new to the platform to understand how it all works, a user journey map is created. It gives a clear and simple picture of the entire process.

User flow diagram

After getting a clear picture of all the external factors and understanding the situations at hand, the next step is diving into the core design phase of the Closet platform. This is where the technical details come into play, focusing on how the app’s navigation will work. A user flow diagram is created to map out the steps users take within the app, making the process clear and ensuring that navigation is intuitive. We also look at the main features to make sure everything fits together smoothly and functions well.

Information architecture

Once the user flow is established, the next step is to focus on the Information Architecture of the platform. In this phase, we break down the app’s content into logical sections and define the relationships between them. The goal is to create a clear and intuitive framework, where users can easily access the features they want, whether it’s browsing through their closet, searching for outfits, managing their luggage or check for delivery updates,
